Low staff in July
Due to summer vacations, the Peace Institute will have fewer staff at work in July. Someone from the staff will be available most of the time, but it is recommendable to prearrange any visits. We kindly ask for patience if response to emails is slower during this month.
 
The Peace Institute is sending three EVS-volunteers

EVS-_Linda_Linda_och_RebeccaThree volunteers from Åland are on their way out in Europe through the youth exchange European Voluntary Service (EVS).

Linda Johansson, 27, will be working at SOS Social Centre in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Linda Adolfsson, 26, will be working at a youth centre in Blauberen, near Ulm in Germany, and Rebecca Lagström, 18, is going to Athens, Greece, to work at Archelon, a rehabilitation centre for sea turtles.

The Peace Institute has taken the role of sending organization, and is happy to see such a high interest in the EVS-program.

 
Blog post on Kyrgyzstan and the International Refugee Day

With attention to the International Refugee Day on the 20th of June, Sarah Stephan, researcher at the Peace Institute, has written a text about the refugee situation in Kyrgyzstan and the challenges facing the international community when it comes to managing the complex conflicts of the 21st century and respond to the human suffering that they create.

The ”Åland example” in Berlin

Researcher at the Peace Institute Sarah Stephan has presented Åland and the Åland example in Berlin as part of a series of events arranged by the Finland Institute.

Questions of the special status of Åland under public international law, its demilitarisation, neutralisation, and language protection were discussed, as well as the applicability of the Åland example to conflicts in other areas.

Girl group method manual published in Russian
IOM_manualInternational organization for migration (IOM) Vilnius office has in co-operation with the Åland Islands Peace Institute published a method manual on the girl group method. The manual "Girls, gender equality and democracy" is written by Mia Hanström and has been translated into Russian and modified according the experience of empowerment sessions with vulnerable girl groups in Kaliningrad Oblast. The manual was released and presented on June 10th 2010 in Kaliningrad.
