OSCE_Securitycommunity_Sia_demilitarisering_Webben kopia.jpg”The rules of demilitarization and neutralization entail a legally binding promise of giving priority to diplomatic means of communication and negotiation, before means of military power, even though power relations are acknowledged.”. So writes Associate Professor Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark, Head of Research at the Åland Islands Peace Institute, in an article with the title ”Demilitarization as a Constructive Tool for Co-operation and Peace: the Example of the Åland Islands”, that has been published in the OSCE's quarterly magazine Security Community, Issue 4/2016.

Debatt NOCO ÅT 1.8.2014In early September, Finland's marine will host the multinational crisis management exercise Northern Coasts 2014 (NOCO), in the surrounding area of Åland. This means that the status of Åland as a demilitarized and neutralized zone is again brought to the fore.

The Director of the Åland Islands Peace Institute Dr. Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark has written an op-ed on this topic that has been published in local newspapers Nya Åland and Tidningen Åland 1.8.2014. The article (in Swedish) can be downloaded in pdf here. A radio interview with director Spiliopoulou Åkermark on the same topic is available on the Åland Radio's website, here (in Swedish).

In her article, Director Spiliopoulou Åkermark points out the importance of informing all participating countries of the Åland status.

An English version of the debate article can be found in pdf here.
