For the Ålands Islands Peace Institute participation in various networks is a necessary means to exchange and develop knowledge on peace issues and methods for empowerment.

In its practical work, the key focus of the ÅIPI is the prevention of violence and the empowerment of individuals and groups at all levels of society.

Within local and international co-operations the Institute strives to develop and ensure the quality of methods for empowerment. Empowerment is regarded as a basis for strengthening the democratic capacity and expertise in society. The Peace Institute's work is to promote personal development and thereby to introduce individual and group opportunities to actively participate in society and solve conflicts by peaceful means.

Youth exchanges, voluntary activities and School Peace in the Åland schools are means to support young people to establish contact with peace work, to develop empowerment and promote peaceful resolution of conflicts, and to broaden horizons through contact with other people's experiences and world views.

By developing the Girl and Boy group method and Fair Sex workshops the Peace Institute contributes to create meeting places where boys and girls can acquire knowledge and discuss gender issues, gender norms and sexual violence. Thus these methods contribute to empowerment and participants may also acquire tools to resolve conflicts peacefully and to participate actively in society .

Methods for peaceful societal development are developed on the Åland Islands in collaboration with other Åland and Nordic organizations and also internationally in collaboration with partners in the Baltics, South Caucasus and in other autonomous regions. The Åland Islands Peace Institute has developed a well-functioning network of non-governmental organizations in Lithuania, Belarus, Latvia as well as the Kaliningrad region and the Karelian Republic in Russia. The cooperation has mainly focused on the model for social work, which has been developed in Lithuania, and the preventive initiatives against sexual slavery. Read more about the background here.

”Norden and peace” is a long term engagement where the ÅIPI wishes to broaden the debates on the possibilites for the Nordic countries to act as a region of peace.
