The Swedish morning paper Sydsvenska dagbladet has recently published an article on the Åland Islands under the headline With Peace as biggest export. The director of the Åland Islands Peace Institute is interviewed on Åland as the Islands of Peace and on the autonomous statut of the islands.The article, in Swedish, can be found at the website of Sydsvenska dagbladet.

Thursday 15 of May Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark, the director of the Åland Islands Peace Institute, held a speech for the Swedish Crown Princess Victoria, who is visiting the Aland Islands. Spiliopoulou Åkermark talked about the Aland Islands as a living example of an autonomous region under constant development. The authonomy is constantly renewed through different forms of cooperation and renegotiations between the Islands and the finnish state. There is also a dialogue between the Åland Islands and the states that have guaranteed their status, not least with Sweden.The Crown Princess, who has taken peace- and conflict studies at the University of Uppsala in Sweden, at the coffee break mentioned to the director of the Åland Islands Peace Institute that she is acquainted with the status of the Aland Island from her studies. The Åland Islands Peace Institue has published a new report about the right of domicile in Åland. In the report, Anna-Lena Sjölund (Researcher at the Åland Peace Institute) focuses on the right to conduct business, and own and/or be in possession of real property in Åland. She compares these rights with the non-discrimination principle of the EU.Anna-Lena Sjölund will present her conclusions at a seminar in Mariehamn at Högskolan på Åland (Navigationsskolegränd 2) April 28th at 14-16.30. Bogdan State, who worked as an intern at the Åland Islands Peace Institute in the summer of 2007, carried out a study on the integration of non-Nordic migrants in the Åland Archipelago. This sociological study presents data on the situation of the migrants and their perceptions regarding integration in the Ålandic society.The study covers most immigrant groups in the Ålandic capital of Mariehamn equally, with the notable exception of Asians and the unemployed, two categories which we believe require further investigation. Bogdan State finds that immigrants face similar barriers to labor market integration as they do on mainland Finland. The report documents a high level of reported first-gate rejection for migrants, a problem faced in particular by Middle Eastern and ex-Soviet migrants. These two groups are also the main victims of “degree inflation”, their educational credentials being discounted by disbelieving employers.The results by-and-large confirm ÅSUB’s findings regarding discrimination, non-Nordic migrants being more likely to be discriminated on the islands, levels of discrimination being correlated with the ethnic hierarchy discussed above. Migrants to Åland are moderately satisfied with government action, while a sizeable proportion of them are not fully aware of their social security entitlements. The respondents hold Ålandic schools in high regard, but it is unclear in what ways their opinions are related to the schools’ pursuing multicultural policies.Download the report here.

The right of domicile is one of the most important parts of the Ålandic autonomy system. The right of domicile is unique also in an international perspective. In June 2007, the Åland Islands Peace Institute together with the Parliament of Åland arranged a seminar in Helsinki about the right of domicile. The presentations are now published in the book "Den åländska hembygdsrätten". Contributors are Pauliine Koskelo, Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark, Jouko Kinnunen, Anna-Lena Sjölund, Rhodri C. Wiliams, Gunnar Jansson and Peter Lindbäck. On October 24th 2007, the Åland Islands Peace Institute arranged a seminar about the position of autonomous regions within the EU. Boken om Ålands demilitarisering och självstyrelse nu på finskaÅlands fredsinstitut gav förra året ut boken Fredens öar. Ålands självstyrelse, demilitarisering och neutralisering på svenska och engelska (Islands of Peace. Åland's autonomy, demilitarisation and neutralisation ). Eftersom det råder stor brist på bra finskspråkigt material om Åland så ger fredsinstitutet nu även ut boken på finska. Seminariet HEMBYGDSRÄTT - NÄRINGSRÄTT - MEDBORGARRÄTT: HÖRNSTENAR I DEN ÅLÄNDSKA SJÄLVSTYRELSEN ordnas i Helsingfors den 14 juni 2007 kl. 13-17 i samband med Ålandsdagarna den 14-16 juni.
